About Bible FM

Bible FM was established in December of 2000 in Mt. Hagen, directly in the center of the mainland of Papua New Guinea. Located on ten acres about two miles outside of the city, our mother station on frequency 92.5 FM reaches approximately 400,000 people in a 100 mile radius.

History

Brad Wells Spreading the word

"I got the vision for the media of radio while working in a remote village about seven hours drive from Mt. Hagen," relates Brad Wells, the founder of Bible FM. One evening after holding a Bible study in a grass-roof hut he was overwhelmed with the amount of work yet to be accomplished and the difficulty of reaching the hundreds of villages he could see from his mountain, much less the thousands beyond the next ridge.

As he pondered the seemingly impossible task, he was startled to hear a very familiar sound coming from the hut at the end the village street. It was American rock n roll music. I had labored hard and long to reach the spot, yet people who did not even know or care about my village had reached it effortlessly. "The thought burst upon me in an instant. Radio! What about radio?" Brad was at once taken by a vision to begin using the available medium of transmitting the Gospel through the air waves reaching thousands, perhaps millions, at the same instant. "I'm here because God has called me to love these people and preach the Gospel to them," says Brad. "Why shouldn't I be using every means possible?"

The start of the radio station was a miracle. Brad and his wife, Deborah, took a sabbatical from the bush for the birth of their third child in Mt. Hagen. As they waited for the baby's arrival, they pursued the avenue of radio. One afternoon as they were kneeling in fervent prayer for this new vision, a knock came on the door. They continued to pray. The knock came louder. When Brad finally went to the door, the guest house attendant insisted he come and take the call from America. It was a man whom they had never met from Clyde, Ohio asking about the possibility of starting a radio station in Papua New Guinea! That was in April of 1999. Eugene Sharp and his family arrived in January of 2000 and twelve months later, Bible FM began broadcasting in December that same year. Only God could accomplish such a feat!

Deborah was intricately involved in organizing the flow of programs right from the start. "Filling 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without one local program available was quite daunting," she remembers. They started the old-fashioned way with an announcer in the chair every waking hour, shuffling music and programs according to a list that was printed weekly. During the night, they used a simple home-owner's CD player for those who were listening late. Soon they upgraded to a fully automated system and had the joy of teaching people who had never seen a computer in real life how to run one.

Learning Radio

In 2003-2004, Bible FM expanded to reach Goroka, Kundiawa, and Madang using a mountain top repeater site atop the country’s highest mountain, Mt. Wilhelm. This worked well and was very cost effective. However, because Mt. Wilhelm is known throughout the world as the highest island peak, climbers from around the globe hired local guides to take them to the top. Bible FM’s equipment began to disappear. After five hits, they removed the site in 2006. Currently, Bible FM is pursuing a more secure site in order to reestablish the link to these other towns.
